Using a tampon for the first time can seem intimidating. But once you get it right, it’s easy-breezy and you won’t feel it at all. In fact, it should not be difficult to insert and should not cause any discomfort once it’s properly inserted. Learn what tampons are & how to use them now.

What is a tampon used for?

A tampon is designed to be inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual flow during your period to provide an invisible protection. Made of cotton, rayon or a blend of cotton and rayon, it helps stop leaks by catching your flow earlier.

How to use a tampon without an applicator?

The thought of inserting a tampon into your vagina may be nerve-racking. Before you insert it, be sure you wash your hands to keep any harmful bacteria on your hands at bay from entering your vagina. It may take a few tries, and if you’ve inserted it properly, you won’t feel that it’s there.

  1. First, hold the bottom of the tampon between your index finger and the thumb.
  2. Next, stand with one leg up or sit on the toilet.
  3. Then, ease it into your vagina with the middle finger. Leave the string hanging outside of your body.
  4. Push it a little further in until you won’t feel it. Remove it and try again with a new tampon if it feels uncomfortable.
  5. Wash your hands when you’re done.
