Are you planning on dyeing your hair a lighter shade or have you recently gone blonde? If so, you will probably know that keeping blonde locks healthy and shiny requires a lot of care and attention. The good news is that it’s not as high-maintenance as you may think. Here are some of our top hair care tips for blondes.

Are You Protecting Your Blonde Hair from the Sun?

Using a UV protective hair spray is a must for those with golden locks. While the sun can lighten natural hair, it can damage dyed hair and make blondes go brassy. To prevent this, simply go for a hair spray or spritz with SPF filters. If you are planning to go somewhere sunny on holiday, grab a sun hat with you. Doing so will help further protect your tresses.

Say no to Brassy Tones

If your hair is starting to look brassy or yellow, don’t panic. Blondes have to use certain products to help them maintain their beautiful shade in-between visits to the salon. If you want to lighten your hair significantly, go for a toner which will help bring out your desired blonde hue.

For general maintenance, consider getting a purple shampoo and conditioner. It may seem odd at first, but purple shampoo gets rid of the brassy shade, bringing back your platinum, ice or ash-blonde tone.

Blondes at the Pool

Did you know that blondes – as well as some darker haired beauties – may see their hair going green if they swim in the pool for too long? The reason for this is copper compounds and chlorine in the water chemically reacting with the hair. This is more likely to happen if you spend a lot of time in the pool without dampening your hair first.

Showering first will help stop your hair soaking up the copper as well as chlorine and avoid getting that frightening green tone. The other solution is putting your swimming cap on. Pool water strips away natural oils and moisture from your hair, leaving you with dry and damage-prone tresses.

How to Prolong Dyed Blonde Hair

There are a few ways that can help to ensure your hair colour stays vibrant for as long as possible:

  • Don’t wash your hair every day. The chemicals within shampoos that help to clean your scalp also strip away the colour. Use dry shampoo in-between washes to make your locks look fresh and bouncy, eliminating the need to wash your hair too often.
  • While many of us like having hot showers, our hair certainly doesn’t. Hot water dries both our skin and tresses, making the hair colour go dull quicker. It’s best to shower in warm water or to opt for a cold rinse after. This will add natural volume and shine to your locks as it will stimulate the hair at the roots to grow faster, be shinier and healthier.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a colour appropriate shampoo and conditioner. These have been specially designed to support and prolong your hair hue. Go for purple shampoo and conditioner once a week, and use blonde shampoo in between.
  • Make sure the ends of your hair are moisturised. Loss of moisture can make your golden locks go dull quicker. You can easily do this using hair masks and treatments made specifically to help preserve colour for blondes.
  • Always go for heat protecting products when using straighteners, hair dryer or curlers. Dyed blonde locks are drier than any other hair type because of harsh bleaching. Heat protectors help to prevent further dryness and breakage.
