Learning how to burp your baby seems like an important skill to master when you have a newborn. Why? When your baby swallows, air bubbles get stuck in your baby’s stomach and cause a lot of discomfort. Let us learn 3 techniques that many parents use and pick up some tips to make burping more effective. It is best to try them all out to see what works best or use a combination.
Over your shoulder
Hold your baby upright against your chest with his chin on your shoulder, all the while supporting him with one hand as you gently pat his back with your other hand.
Tip: Cup your hand slightly as you pat, as this is gentler than using a flattened palm.
Sitting on your lap
Sit your baby on your lap while supporting his chin and chest with one hand. Rub or pat the back with your other hand.
Tip: Use repeated, gentle pats on your little one’s back.
Lying across your lap
Lay your baby on your lap with his belly faced down and gently rub or pat his back. Make sure you support your baby’s head, so it is higher than his chest.
Tip: Drape a towel or bib over your lap to protect your clothing in case your baby spits up.
