If you have sensitive skin, the first thing you need to do while picking a skincare or makeup products is to read the product’s ingredient list. It is no exception for sunscreen—you have to know what to pick, and more importantly, what NOT!
What to choose?
- Physical sunblock agents
Physical sunscreen ingredients are typically less irritating and more friendly to sensitive skin. Look for natural minerals such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
- Soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients
Sunscreens with calming and anti-inflammatory ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and ceramides are great in preventing sensitive skin from flaring-up too.
What to avoid?
- Chemical sunscreen ingredients
Oxybenzone is known to cause irritations to some skin while producing eczema-like allergic reactions. It’s best to avoid this ingredient if your skin is sensitive.
- Fragrance
Another common culprit of skin irritation is fragrance, synthetic or natural. Make sure the product does have added fragrance even though it’s smell-free, because manufacturers may add scents to cover the unpleasant aroma of some ingredients.
- Alcohol
Dehydration caused by monohydric alcohol, such as ethanol, may weaken skin’s protective abilities.
- Preservatives
Preservatives such as parabens and propylene glycol can trigger adverse effects, such as stinging, redness or itching on the skin of certain people. Try your best to stay away from products that contain these ingredients.
